Traditionnaly
the 6th of January in Gemona del Friuli takes place a
celebration inspirated from the Middle Ages: the Thaler's
Epiphany.
In the typical medieval scenary of via Bini, the historical
procession, at the sound of the drums that gives the rhythm
to ladies and knights, escorting the Mayor until the Dome
of Saint Maria Assunta, where the Mass takes place.
During the religious function the Civil Community, represented
by the Mayor, offers to the Church, represented by the
Archpriest, a material gift such as a silver thaler, as
sign of submission of the temporal power to the spiritual
one.
The ceremony is full of ancient gestures, that have not
changed at all since nowadays, they are the same ones
that the Magnificent Community of Gemona has done for
centuries and centuries.
The delivery of the Thaler in the hands of the People's
Captain, the procession of the nobles in their rich dresses
followed by the sound of the drums and escorted from the
guards, the medieval animation and the exhibition of musicians
in the historical center should be interesting reasons
to come in Gemona for people that love medieval's traditions
or for those carful to ancient history. |
